Worship

Over a period of time visits will be made by the Worship Team to other Churches and activities associated with them.   As was said at a service at Beetham there is room for a wide variety of services and styles in our worship.  This is a sentiment that it is hoped will be reflected in this column from time to time by commenting briefly but positively on the range of services and activities seen by the Worship Team.

In a spirit of being different and challenging some parishes have a special service once a month or even annually.  Beetham have a very well attended service once a month which effectively combines Morning Prayer with a Communion Service lasting no more than an hour.  Perhaps the short Sermon helped!

At Underbarrow they have discovered an exciting way of attracting children and young people, with their parents, to a Sunday club!  Once a month in the Vicarage living room they hold a T@4 .  This initiative has been progressing well for several months and is well attended.  It is predominately aimed at younger children but is not out of place for all ages.  After introductions and family hymns there is a simple bible story and making activities such as plasticine fish and real bread.  Prayers and a tea party conclude the simple and non threatening gathering.  Underbarrow with Crosthwaite also had a holiday club entitled "Going Bananas."   St. Mark's at Natland have also held a holiday club entitled "Pirates."  Some photographs of this event can be seen on this website.

Holy Trinity also have a particular event once a month, a Taize service.  This also had a splendid turnout.  The darkened atmosphere  was punctuated by the light of many candles.  During the very prayerful but emotional and moving service the congregation had the opportunity to light their own candles and say a personal prayer.  By contrast St. Mary's at Kirkby Lonsdale held an annual event.  A packed congregation both listened to and enthusiasticlly joined in with a Vespers service.  Many well known hymns were sung to Jazz music played by The Lune Valley Vintage Jazz Band.  As it said in the programme foot tapping and clapping is permitted.  J.C.
